Sperm donation

StorkKlinik’s expertise in sperm donation

Denmark has some of the largest sperm banks in the world. There is relaxed legislation here and no waiting time for sperm donation. At StorkKlinik we have specialised in helping single women and lesbian couples. Every day we get women from Denmark and abroad who would like help to have a longed-for child.

We have gained lots of experience in giving advice about sperm donation and the use of donor sperm. We also have a close relationship and a good co-operation with the sperm banks, StorkKlinik has a lot of contact with the women who have already had children using donor sperm. Therefore, our employees know a lot about what the process involves—from when you first start to think about using a sperm donor up to the time the child starts to ask questions like: Who is my father?

The A–Z of sperm donation

Naturally when you come to the clinic, we will assist you throughout the process. We explain what treatment involves, how to select a sperm donor (an anonymous or non-anonymous sperm donor, etc.), and the issues to consider regarding choosing a sperm donor. During the initial consultation we will tackle some of the questions you will be asked when you are pregnant and later when the child is older and going to school or university, etc.: What will you tell everyone else? How will you tell your child that they were conceived via a donor? And how will you deal with questions from friends and teachers?

You can read more on this page about how we advise you about sperm donation, the different types of sperm donors you can choose from as well as how to order donor sperm.

Interview with a lesbian couple about sperm donation

The best people to tell us about the process, has got to be other women who have chosen to use a sperm donor. StorkKlinik has helped Anja and Gro Hammerseng-Edin, a lesbian couple from Norway who are well-known handball players who have always been open about their treatment.

You can listen to a podcast as well as shorter video clips that were filmed during an information meeting in Oslo, where they talk openly about their experience: Their thoughts about selecting a sperm donor, the emotions they experienced during the process regarding the donor, and since then how they have spoken with their son about how he came about via a sperm donor.

Network of donor-conceived children

If you have a child via sperm donation at StorkKlinik, you become part of a unique network of other single and lesbian women, who has been through the same process as you. This network can be a good source of support for you and your donor-conceived child. You child can see that there are other children who have come into the world via sperm donation and that they are not different. You can probably discuss issues or share your experience with the other women. Read more about our network as well as the Stork Event here.

Material for donor-conceived children in school

Although our focus at StorkKlinik is on helping you to have a child using a sperm donor, we also like to address important questions regarding being the parent of a donor-conceived child. We do this, for example, through our annual Stork Event, where single and lesbian women can meet.

We have also produced some material for when you are about to send your child to school. It is generally when children are of school age than many of them become aware of differences in families, and this raises a number of questions—particularly in the more junior classes—where the children perhaps do not understand fully what the “father is a sperm donor” means. There is lots of good advice in the material for you as the parent and also for the teachers. Read more here.
