Causes of infertility

On average, the causes of infertility are the same in men and women. To increase the chances of a positive result from treatment, the woman and the man have a fertility test and the woman is treated in most cases even if it is only the man who has fertility problems. We quickly get into the most important aspects of the menstrual cycle. This description should help to increase understanding of the next investigation stage and the treatment options that are available.

The most important elements of the menstrual cycle

The influence of hormones: Hormones that naturally occur in the body affect egg development in the ovaries and lead to the development of the egg that may be fertilised.

Ovulation: During ovulation the ripe follicle ruptures releasing the egg that can now be fertilised. The egg moves along the fallopian tube where it is fertilised and then moves into the womb where it implants.

Fertilisation: During fertilisation a sperm cell penetrates the egg. The egg and sperm cell fuse. A woman ovulates about halfway through her cycle, i.e. days 9–16, but this can vary greatly from woman to woman.

Implantation: When the fertilised egg embeds in the lining of the womb this is called implantation. First the corpus luteum (from when the egg is released) and later the placenta produce the hormone progesterone, which is important for preservation of the pregnancy.
