Being a single parent

More and more women are choosing to become single parents. Many single women would really like to have someone to have a child with. So, they may have waited to find the right person, and never found them. And many woman wonder: How long should I wait?

When single woman are approaching 40

A woman’s fertility declines sharply from the age of 35. If you want children, it is important to consider what you will do if you don’t meet the right person in the near future.

That is why towards the end of their 30s, many single women decide to follow their dreams and become single parents if they are to become mothers to much longed-for children. If a partner shows up at a later date, then so be it.

StorkKlinik – unexpected help for single women

StorkKlinik has been helping single women from the Nordic countries and Europe become single parents since 1999. StorkKlinik was originally opened by Midwife Nina Stork, because she wanted to make it possible for single and lesbian women to become mothers at a time when Danish law did not permit doctors inseminating women who were not married or living with a man.

Therefore, Nina Stork decided to help single women to become parents. The special history behind the clinic means that since them, StorkKlinik has focused on helping single women to become parents. You will see lots of other single women who are in exactly the same situation and stage of their lives as you.

A cosy, secure environment

When talking with women who will be having fertility treatment, it is important for them that they are not made to feel like a patient. You are not ill after all; you just want to have a child on your own.

At StorkKlinik we really try to create a nice, homely environment, where you feel welcome and in safe hands from the moment you step in the door. We try to ensure that you meet the people you’ve met before. In the clinic we have nice small lounges and cushions, stork teddies for children, books aimed at single parents and loads of photos of babies that came into being with our assistance. We also have a big map of the world with pins it showing the countries that women visiting the clinic have come from. There’s also a noticeboard for singletons where you can meet other women.

When you are having treatment in the clinic, you get a single room, where you can rest afterwards. All the rooms have a small lounge area. This means that you can bring a friend or a family member with you while you’re having treatment.

When choosing a donor

At StorkKlinik, we have years of experience in advising and helping women with regard to choosing donor sperm. We have a close co-operation with the sperm banks, and most women who come to the clinic use donor sperm. As a prospective single parent, we can give you advice about the options available to you concerning the use of donor sperm.

Using donor sperm to become a parent leaves you with more questions that you must make a decision about. For example you must think about how you will tell your child that they came about via a donor? What do you tell your family, friends and acquaintances? What will you say to the teachers in school or the nursery school?

During the initial consultation we will tackle some of these questions. You will probably discus these and other questions with other single mothers at, for example, the Stork Event.

Network for single mothers and donor children

When you become a single parent via StorkKlinik, you also get the opportunity to be part of a network for single mothers who have made the same decision as you. Every year since 2006, we have celebrated the children 2006 at the annual Stork Event in Copenhagen. The Stork Event has attracted large numbers of donor-conceived children and their mothers. This is a very special community, and it’s special for the children to see that they are not the only children of single parents. There are many different types of families. As a single parent you will get the opportunity to meet others who are in exactly the same situation as you, and we often find that new friendships arise because of what you have in common, i.e. that you have chosen to become a single parent.

Every year in December we would like to wish all donor-conceived children and their mothers a Happy Christmas at StorkKlinik. This is also an opportunity to enjoy a cosy Christmas atmosphere and for children and their parents to network. The Christmas Event at the clinic is a unique opportunity to show your child where they started life. We know that this means a lot to many of our single mothers and their children.

Lots of single mothers like to follow StorkKlinik on  Facebook or Instagram, where we often share photos and small stories.

Books for single mothers and donor-conceived children

At StorkKlinik, we generally promote books for single women and donor-conceived children. For example, you could start talking to your child by reading the books about Karla, written by single mother Pia Olsen and her daughter of the same name, Karla Elena Olsen. The books are about Kara and her experience of being a donor-conceived child without a father.

„Hvor er Karlas far?“ [Where is Karla’s Father?]

„Karla ønsker sig en far“ [Karla Wants a Father]

„Karla leger ’mor og børn“ [Karla plays “Mother and Baby”]

„Karla har en strømpetyv i familien“ [There’s a sock thief in Karla's family

Parents of donor children in school

More and more children of single and lesbian women who were donor-conceived are now going to school. Together with the European Sperm Bank, StorkKlinik has produced some brochures containing good advice for single parents of donor-conceived children and also the children’s teachers.
