Overweight

To be overweight is a private matter for most people.
Some have family related overweight, other have stress or illness as a cause.
In some cases it is psychological problems that are the reason why some weigh more than what is good for them.
Some women thrive being overweight, others do not.
Clinically overweight is a BMI of 25 or above.

BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated as follows:
Weight in kilos: (height in meters) x (height in meters)
e.g. 59 : 1,68 x 1,68 = 20,9

Overweight influences fertility
Overweight women may have up to 70% more difficulty conceiving that middleweight women.

This is due to fat holding on to the hormones that the body needs in order to function optimally.

If your BMI is above 25, it is advantageous for you to loose some weight before you start your insemination proces.

If your BMI is above 35, we would like to talk to you about concrete plans for a future weight loss in order to reach a BMI of 35.

Several pregnancy complications
Overweight women experience more pregnancy complications that others, e.g. increased blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, pregnancy diabetes and premature birth.
During the delivery problems with weakening of contractions and fixed shoulders may occur.
Deformities in children of overweight mothers are also more frequent, just as late foetal death is more frequent.
According to calculations one in 10 late foetal death could have been avoided if the woman was middleweight.

If your BMI is too high
TAKE COURAGE, if you only lose 10% of your current weight you decrease the risk remarkably and you will become pregnant faster.
If you are obese we recommend that you out of consideration for the health of you and your future baby lose 10% of your weight before you begin your insemination process.

For most people it is hard to lose weight alone. It may therefore be a good idea to seek support and encouragement and be in a group with others that are going in the same direction.

Through you own physician you can be referred to a dietician who may help you by changing your eating habits. We also recommend alternative measures of treatment e.g. acupuncture.
